On October 1, 1999, Jeffrey Henderson, William Goodwin Aurelio Professor of Greek Language and Literature at Boston University, assumed the position of Editor of the Loeb Classical Library, succeeding Professor George P. Goold, who has retired from the post which he has held with such distinction since 1974. In announcing the appointment Professor Zeph Stewart of Harvard University, Trustee of the Loeb Classical Library Foundation, paid tribute to the qualities that have made Professor Goold's editorship such a notable success: his judicious editorial policies, vast knowledge of Greek and Latin languages and literatures, refined sense of style, and meticulous attention to detail. "My greatest contribution to the Loeb Classical Library," Stewart said, "was to persuade George Goold to assume the editorship. We have worked together in complete harmony for a quarter-century to improve and expand the series. I am delighted that Jeffrey Henderson has agreed to succeed him. He has worked closely with each of us in the past, and he brings to the post a wide knowledge of classical literature, excellent judgement, and extensive experience in the editing and translation of classical texts, exemplified most recently in his work on the splendid new Aristophanes in the Loeb series."

The first editors of the Loeb Classical Library were T. E. Page and W. H. D. Rouse, who were named by James Loeb in his announcement of the series in 1911.
